(2003 – DVD The Dark Side of The moon)
Regarding “Brain Damage”: it surely had to do with Syd, I think it deals with safeguarding the idea of being different from others; the fundamental point being whether we are able to deal with Us and Them.

Often, the loveliest songs are the most evident ones and Money is amazingly evident, that’s why it’s beautiful. |

Sei fai parte di una band e suoni qualcosa a caso, poi si sviluppa e cambia.(2003 – DVD The Dark Side of The moon) If you’re part of a band and you play something random, then it develops and changes. |

Dark Side of the moon è un’espressione di carattere politico, filosofico, umanitario, che doveva essere comunicata (2003 – DVD The Dark Side of The moon) Dark Side of the Moon is a political, philosophical and humanitarian factor that just had to be expressed. |

Are you at ease making solo albums? Are you worried that probably you won’t have the same success that the Pink Floyd have? |

Well, perhaps. My architecture studies have led me to see the things which helped me view my emotional estrangement from the rock’n’ roll public. This was the starting point of The Wall. Having adopted autobiographical narration was secondary with respect to the main achievement. Isn’t it fucking bad? I asked. I’m here on the stage and you’re down there, isn’t it horrible? What are we doing here? |

(2002 Dvd The Anniversary 30° The Dark Side of the moon)That year, I realized life was proceeding as it should, my mother was obsessed with education and the idea of infancy, adolescence and so on…they were times in which you were being prepared for a future life. All of a sudden, I realized that life did not start later, but from square one and it always proceeded that way.You can take the reigns at any time and turn fate to your liking, this was a revelation, a great shock for me. |

Devi fare ciò che sei bravo a fare. You have to do what you’re good at doing. |

It was the beginning of writing about other people, there are forces that push life towards a certain direction. |

(2002 Dvd The Anniversary 30° The Dark Side of the moon)I listened to Dark Side recently and what still strikes me is that I got away with it because it’s so full of puberty..breathe, breathe, breathe in the air. |

It’s not important what the papers say, if people go to a concert and don’t have fun, they won’t go again. |

“Our music can generate awesome nightmares or it can throw you into the most fascinating ecstacy. Usually the latter happens. We realize that our audience stops dancing and just stands there in awe-stricken ecstacy”. |

If you’re in a band and playing something random, sooner or later it will be further developed. |

Success does not make the slightest difference in your perception and even when you perceive, you need a very long time to really assimilate it. |

I was on stage and there was this kid who kept on screaming like a savage. Finally, I called him and when he was quite close, I spit in his face. I was so shocked by this incident and I thought, hey wait a minute, this is all wrong, I hate all of this. |

1975, the most exhausting and nevrotic year of my life, maybe the only exception being my divorce case. Parker was used to sitting on top of his pyramid and I on top of mine. We were so used to doing things by ourselves. If I had been the film director (which is something I would have never done), the movie would have been much more restrained; but this is one of the reasons why I wanted Parker to direct it. He portrays with a steady, secure hand and his main concern is not to bore the audience; this was OK by us because we wanted it that way, like a punch to the face. |

The idea was to do something less abstract than in the past. |

“Io ho usato droghe psichedeliche solo due volte nelle mia vita.
“I did psychedelic drugs only two times in my life. This happened after they labelled our music as psychedelic. The first time was absolutely marvellous: I was on a Greek island in a dreamy environment and I don’t know how long the effect lasted, but it seemed like a very long period. It was a very powerful and strange experience. I can’t say if it influenced our music. I did more acid a couple of years later and I recall that I was crossing 8th Avenue in New York, trying to buy a sandwich and a bottle of milk. At a certain point, I couldn’t move in the middle of the street. I never did it again…” |

You can work on an album forever, but when it’s done, you will never think ‘oh my God, maybe this time I made it’. You will never be totally satisfied with your work. |

“The name Atom Heart Mother was taken from the heading of an article in the The Evening Standard. This article was on a pregnant woman who had an atomic powered pace-maker. It was a random article, a heading that Ron Geesin showed me and I liked it, that’s all. |

I am bored with most of the work we did. |

(Intervista a Nicky Horne, il dj di Capital Radio per“Pink Floyd Story”, in onda il 21 gennaio 1977) “Let me say that, true, the violence is watered down by some sadness and even sympathy along the line, but this is a very violent record. The songs are really very violent and I think that it is for this reason that the music is a little sharper than our previous records. The idea of ANIMALS lingered in my mind for many years. Actually, it is something revisited, don’t you think? During the takes, I thought that this idea would be fit to bond the songs together. For this reason I was forced to re-write the lyrics to Raving And Drooling, and now Sheep, which was nothing but a sound-off… It was a rather incoherent sound-off on the idea of abuse, just like Pigs, even though it was more sympathetic….if it is possible to disclose abuse sympathetically. This is the actual strong point of the words at the end of each verse; it was missing on Raving which was rather shitty… I felt so depressed because of this that I discarded it with rage and I haven’t listened to it since….”. |

In the beginning, we got together quite a lot. Going on tour together was something very particular. But soon you get bored. Things like family make it end rather quickly. On tour, the Floyd were busy playing football, going on trips, playing Monopoly and Backgammon and long reading sessions on the side of the swimming pool. We were a bit more concerned with groupies and drugs than other bands and we didn’t mix very much with other “superstars” (except for Dave Gilmour).” “There were always big disputes in the band between “the architects” and “the musicians”: Nicky Mason and I were the inferior “architects” and we were made fun of by Dave and Rick who were “the musicians”. There was always strong opposition by “the musicians” to “theatrical” shows. So we can say that it was thanks to my stubborness if we did these kinds of shows.” |

E invece, è vero, ti senti meravigliosamente per un mese o poco più, e poi cominci a renderti conto che non fa realmente tanta “At that point (the success obtained with “Dark Side…”), all our ambitions were fulfilled. When you’re 15 and think “I want to get a band together”, apart from the vague thoughts of a plush apartment and not having to wake up till 4pm, your goal is ….the Big Album. Number 1 on Billboard. When you make it, a whole lot of your ambitions are fulfilled. Actually, you feel really good for a month or so, then you realize it doesn’t make that much difference after all. If you were a happy person, you were happy before and you will be after as well; if you were not happy, you were not happy before and you will not be after. That sort of thing won’t change your attitude at all. Anyway, even if you know that, it will take you some time to get it into your head.” |

(R. Waters in Rolling Stone, febbraio 1980)In all of my school years, there had never been any work on the existence of Man nor had there ever been any philosophical debates on the condition of Man, on what human beings are and why… The education system is set up in such a way that there is no possibilty of being enhanced as a person because they cage you in from when you are 5”. |

“Rock ‘n’ roll is becoming greed under the form of entertainment, exactly like war which has become greed under the form of politics.” |

“Non ho lasciato il gruppo. Ho telefonato agli altri invitandoli a pranzo. Ho detto: ‘Guardate, è tutto finito, OK’. Non possiamo metterci qui a sospirare. Accettatelo!’ (R. Waters in “Spotlight on The Pink Floyd”, Brisbane radio, 2 febbraio 1988)I did not leave the band. I just called the others and invited them for lunch. I said: ‘Look, it’s all over, OK’. Afterwards, their manager called me back and said: ‘Do you realize that if you don’t comply with your CBS contract or any other company, they could sue you for damages and bla bla bla…?’. I replied: “I don’t believe you’. And he said: ‘Ask your lawyers’. I checked that out and… yeep! This is how it went: ‘My God’ and after a while’: ‘Come on, it’s over. We are not a band anymore. We can’t just sit here. Accept the situation!’ They said no and later I found out the only legal way out was to ask them for 20-25% of profits if they decided to keep callng themselves Pink Floyd. So, seeing that I am not keen on my share, there is nothing much else to be done…” |
