In deep...

Born Roger Keith Barrett on 60 Glisson Road in Cambridge, England, on January 6, 1946, into a British middle class family.

Barrett displayed musical interests at an early age, starting out with a ukulele and a banjo, before taking up the guitar.

He played with various bands in the Cambridge and London, England areas, before forming The Pink Floyd in 1965.

During his time with The Pink Floyd, Barrett was the guitarist, singer and primary songwriter for the band.

He toured extensively with the band from 1965 through 1967 and recorded the classic first Pink Floyd album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), which today is regarded as a psychedelic masterpiece.

Despite public acclaim and support, Barrett's troubles in coping with the realites of the music business led to thiswithdrawal and a lessening role in the band in early 1968.

Additional recordings of Barrett with The Pink Floyd appeared on the second Pink Floyd album, A saucerful of secrets (1968), but the album marked the end of Barrett's tenure with the band.

His departure from The Pink Floyd was officially announced on April 6, 1968.

Syd Barrett

Subsequent to leaving The Pink Floyd, Barrett recorded two solo albums, The Madcap Laughs (1970) and Barrett (1970) and formed a short-lived band called Stars in 1972.

Additional Syd Barrett solo albums have been released, but they consist of old recordings made during the 1969-1971 time period.

Barrett has since retired completely from the music business and currently lives alone in Cambridge, England.
