Quando Dark side fu pronto credo che ciascuno
di noi sentisse che era la cosa migliore che avessimo mai fatto
ma nessuno si sognò di pensare che fosse cinque volte meglio
di Meddle, otto volte meglio di Atom Heart Mother o che avesse
un tale successo commerciale.Era un buon disco.Ma per giustificare
il fenomeno bisogna aggiungere che si trovò al posto giusto
nel momento giusto.(1972)
When Dark Side was ready, I think that each of us believed it
was the best thing we had ever done, but no-one dreamed of thinking
that it might have been five times better than Meddle, eight times
better than Atom Heart Mother or that it would have had such a
big commercial success. It was a good record. Anyhow, we must
add that it was in the right place at the right time (1972). |

una band acquisisce talvolta una reputazione che non ha nulla
a che vedere con quello che è realmente.
Così questa associazione tra i Pink Floyd e la fantascienza.
Certo, avevamo un interesse nella fantascienza, leggevamo Robert
Heinlein e Dune, e Ray Bradbury, ed avevamo un enorme
interesse in che cosa ci avrebbe riservato il futuro, ecc.
La gente ancora pensa a noi come "la musica delle sfere celesti"
e così via, mentre negli ultimi 15 anni io sono stato molto
più
attento ai disordini mentali e di personalità, piuttosto
che ad alcunchè riguardante gli alieni.
Nessuno di noi ha mai nutrito interessi per l'occulto, e credo
che nel nostro lavoro non si riuscirebbe a trovare alcun riferimento
a cose simili, come invece si può riscontrare nel Led Zeppelin..."
"It’s interesting how a band sometimes acquires
a reputation that has nothing to do with what that band is in
reality. Just like the association between Pink Floyd and science-fiction.
We certainly did have an interest in sci-fi; we used to read Robert
Heinlein and Dune and Ray Bradbury and we were greatly interested
in what the shape of future things would be, etc. People still
think of us as being “the music of the celestial world”
and so on while in the last 15 years, I was much more into mental
and personality disorders instead of anything regarding aliens.
None of us was ever into any occultism and I think that no reference
to it can be found in our work, unlike Led Zeppelin..."

"Dark Side..." in cui avremmo potuto scioglierci come
gruppo... c'era in noi un certo nervosismo su come continuare.
Tranne un paio di date in Europa, il nostro unico concerto fu
il 4 novembre 1973 per beneficenza al Rainbow theatre di Londra,
in cui raccogliemmo 10.000 sterline per Robert Wyatt, l'ex-batterista
dei Soft Machine, che era caduto da una finestra spezzandosi la
schiena e rimanendo paralizzato."

Side..." when we could have split up as a band...there was
this nervousness around on how we were to continue. Apart from
a couple of dates in Europe, we only gave a benefit concert on
4th November 1973 at the Rainbow theatre in London where we collected
10.000 pounds for Robert Wyatt, Soft Machine’s former drummer,
who had fallen from a window breaking his back and became paralyzed."

sopravvivere, in genere. Penso che in ogni caso Roger avesse ragione

fossimo veramente interessati a continuare a suonare i suoi dischi
‘solistici’ e non è stata una cosa grave per
noi doverlo fare, ma con il suo abbandono si è creata una
sorta di pressione che ci ha indotto a continuare a produrre.
Che poi il disco piaccia o no è un’altra faccenda,
l’importante è che le circostanze ci hanno costretto

“I think that the band was really regenerated. I mean that
bands in our age group need something that will purify them in
order to generally survive. I think that Roger was right in any
case when he stated that the band was 'definitely dead’,
because it was indeed dead from his point of view. I don’t
think we were really interested in playing his ‘solo’
records and it wasn’t such a serious thing for us to do
it, but his leaving the band created a sort of pressure on us
to keep on producing. Whether the record was appreciated or not
is another matter, the important thing is that the circumstances
forced us to get down and keep on working”. (1987, ref.)
