A meeting with - Il mio incontro con Roger Waters di Veronica Waters

Ricevo un invito per la conferenza stampa per la presentazione dell'opera lirica tanto attesa di Roger Waters presso l'auditorium di Roma: Ca ira.

Senza esitare un attimo decido di andare a Roma assieme ad altre persone, un ringraziamento prezioso va a Paolo Ansali (www.musicalnews.com) e Andrea Conti.

Vi racconto il mio incontro con Roger Waters, mi presento un'ora prima dell'orario previsto, un po' agitata, emozionata, non avevo assolutamente idea di come si potesse svolgere la conferenza, mi aspettavo tutto e niente.

Dopo un po' di attesa , vedo avvicinarsi delle persone nella sala degli ospiti dove si sarebbe svolta poi la conferenza.
Così mi avvicino anch'io in modo frettoloso, mi siedo subito alla prima fila, davanti un tavolo con dei microfoni e le targhettine con i nomi.
Quella di Roger era ovviamente in mezzo e io ho avuto occasione e la fortuna di mettermi proprio davanti alla sua targhettina.
La conferenza doveva iniziare alle ore 15.00, guardo l'orologio, ore 15.10, mi giro per caso infondo alla sala ed incredula vedo una chioma bianca, mi alzo e vedo Roger posto davanti ad un poster di cartone con la presentazione della sua opera.

Mi dirigo verso Roger dove lui stava posando per i fotografi.
La prima emozione, lo stupore, un uomo alto, magro, carnagione bianchissima, mi sembrava una persona dell'altro mondo, finta, di cartone...invece era vero, era Waters.
Lo guardo incredula, anche io riesco a scattare due foto di cui in una guarda proprio il mio mirino, ad un certo punto s'incammina verso di me ma perchè ero dalla parte per entrare nella sala, gli allungo la mano per salutarlo e spontaneamente mi scappa un ciao;lui un po' stupito mi stringe la mano e mi risponde allo stesso modo:ciao.

Mentre si incammina dentro la sala noto che non c'era nessuno che mi impediva di stargli vicino e mi trovo ad incamminarmi dietro a Roger mentre lui si dirige verso la sua postazione.Insomma in quei frangenti di secondi sembravo una delle sue segretarie.

Inizia la conferenza alle 15.20, un signore di nome Severini che scusatemi non ricordo la sua funzione dell'auditorium, fa un'introduzione spiegando delle difficoltà che ci sono stati per organizzare questo incontro, difficoltà di organizzazione e tutto quello che comporta l'organizzare un evento di un personaggio famoso ed importante della musica internazionale.

Lascia la parola a Roger per iniziare la sua promozione dell'opera.

La sala in completo silenzio, Roger sta zitto per qualche secondo, direi anche imbarazzante.
Finalmente inizia il discorso sottolinenando che lui non spiegherà niente ma risponderà con felicità solo alle domande.

Altri secondi in silenzio come se nessuno se lo potesse aspettare.

Adesso non starò a scrivervi le relative domande e le risposte di Roger, quelle sono già state menzionate nel forum con spiegazioni eccellenti dove poi vi riporto per facilitarvi il link per trovare queste informazioni.

Vi riporto quello che ho compreso ed intuito sommando tutte le domande poste e le risposte di Roger.

La conferenza si è svolta su basi inevitabili, che non potevano suscitare che curiosità, i temi di base sono stati questi:

1)La nascita di Ca ira, l'idea, la decisione di prendere in mano un'opera, un lavoro complesso;
2)Del perchè questa fissazione degli argomenti che hanno la storia dietro con sè per non parlare dei fatti politici;
3)La differenza tra The Wall e Cai ra;
4)Tecnologia del sound;
5)Riflessioni su Live 8 e quello che lui ha provato;
6)Se Ca ira ha anche in sostanza un qualcosa che racconta anche dei fatti di terrorismo che sono accaduti in questi ultimi tempi;
7)La rivelazione che tra lui e Gilmour, vent'anni di litigi per posizioni opposte, ed una consapevolezza della schiocchezza di aver fatto l'errore della divisione;
8)Del punto di incontro tra Roger e Gilmour;
9)Un possibile futuro di reunion Pink Floyd ma non inteso per beneficenza;


Roger risponde che aveva in mente di fare questo dal 1988, un lavoro durato per 12 anni, svolto nel suo studio privato in America dove adesso vive stabilmente.
La fissazione per i fatti politici e storici hanno una radice per lui lontana e molto profonda inevitabilmente non sarebbe stato possibile evitare la cosa..
Sua madre insegnante e personalità pesante, combattiva e fortemente immersa nell'ambiente politico comunista.
Come non rimanere influenzati da questo?
Su padre che conosciamo benissimo la sua storia, morto e sepolto a pochi chilometri da Roma, ad Anzio, come non rimanere influenzato anche da questo fatto non a caso per Roger l'Italia ha per lui un significato importante.

La differenza tra The Wall e Caira è che la prima lui ha usato delle basi diverse, la batteria, la chitarra, il basso, per la seconda c'è l'orchestra, il coro...ed inoltre l'idea non è nata dala sua testa, Ca ira non l'ha creata lui mentre The Wall si.

Per la tecnologia del sound non lascia molto da dire, anzi esprime infatti poco interesse per le nuove tecnologie del sound.

Ca ira anche se si basa sulla rivoluzione francese ha alcuni aspetti che toccano i fatti negativi del nostro presente.

Per il live Roger sorride guardando in basso, esprime la sua felicità per aver incontrato gli altri, l'aver suonato le canzoni del passato, è stato per lui un'emozione grandissima.

Sembra che Roger si sia convinto ed abbia capito che si può vivere con persone che hanno anche idee opposte alle nostre.
Che è possibile trovare un punto di incontro e che si è reso conto adesso di quanto sia stato infantile da parte sua aver preso quelle posizioni.
Chiude la conferenza stampa rispondendo che riguardo ai Pink Floyd ed ad una possibilità di una riunione risponde con un sorriso, inclinando la testa esclamando: forse

Finite le domande mi alzo subito per farmi autografare una foto che ho sempre avuto con me dove ritrae lui che sorride da giovane con la testa inclinata, mi guarda ed esclama: my photo

Mi firma la foto e gli porgo il mo coupon che avevo preparato a casa con le pagine più significative del sito, la cover del sito, l'homepage, la biografia di Roger, la stampa dello staff di Pink Floyd Style e i relativi wallpaper.
Sopra il coupon scritto a caratteri grandissimi l'indirizzo del sito e l'indirizzo di casa, non si sa mai, vero?

Dopo di me un assalto di persone per l'autografo, faccio notare che sono stata:

1)la prima a far firmare l'autografo e non come gli altri sul cartellino del cd ma su una foto che mi sono portata da casa dove ritrae Roger nel 1971.
2)di aver consegnato e regalato a Roger, il mio sito, Pink Floyd Style.

Alla fine degli autografi Roger si alza, riesco solo a toccargli la spalla e salutarlo mentre lui ormai era già girato di spalle.
Ci fermiamo per assaggiare dei pasticcini offerti con succhi e caffè, scambio email con persone conosciute in quell'occasione, ad un certo punto dopo 20 minuti decidiamo di uscire, infondo vediamo Roger fuori all'aperto che viene intervistato da una rete televisiva, rubo anche qui l'ultima occasione imprevista di averlo ancora vicino, mi faccio strappare una foto mentre lui viene intervistato.

Roger entra all'auditorium, chiudono le porte, lo spettacolo è finito.

Usciamo fuori, ancora increduli ed adesso mi ritrovo qui che sto scrivendo la mia vicenda e ancora non riesco a credere, la cosa che mi fa contenta non è tanto per l'autografo o per averlo visto, la mia soddisfazione più grande è aver avuto la possibilità di dargli personalmente il materiale del sito Pink Floyd Style e chissà....e felice di aver avuto degli scambi visivi, lui che guardava il mio mirino della mia macchina ditigale.

I received an invitation for the press conference regarding the presentation of Ca ira, Roger Water’s eagerly awaited opera, at the auditorium in Rome.

Without a moment of hesitation, I decided to go to Rome together with other people, a hearty thank you to Paolo Ansali.This is my story of my encounter with Roger Waters, I got there one hour before schedale, I was a bit excited, I didn’t have the slightest clue on how the conference would go, I expected everything and nothing. After some waiting, I see some people walking towards the guest hall where the conference was to take place.

So I head for the guest hall myself, I quickly take a seat in the front row, in front of a table with mikes and name tags on it.Roger’s name tag was in the middle and I had the opportunity and the luck of sitting right in front of his tag.The conference was scheduled for 3 pm, I look at my watch, 3.10 pm, I turn around and by chance I see a ”white mane”, I can hardly believe it. I get up and see Roger standing in front of a carton prop of the presentation of his opera.I go towards Roger where he was having some photos taken.The initial emotion, the stunning surprise, a tall, slim man with very a white complexion; he looked like a person from another world, a fake person, made of carton...instead it was all real, it was Waters.

I watch him not believing my eyes, I even manage to take a couple of photos.…in one of these, he is looking right into my viewfinder. Suddenly, he walks towards me because I was on the entrance side of the guest hall; I push forward my hand to greet him and suddenly I say hello; he is a bit surprised, shakes my hand and answers in the same way: hello..While he was walking into the guest hall, I noticed that there was nobody there to keep me from staying close to him and I find myself walking behind Roger while he heads for his seat.

In those few moments, I looked like one of his secretaries.

The press conference starts at 3:20 pm. A certain Mr. Severini, I am sorry, but I don’t remember what role he had in the auditorium, opens the conference by stating all the difficulties there were in the organization of this meeting; the difficulties and what is behind organizing the event of such an important international musician and artist.He ends his introduction and Roger takes the mike to start the promotion of his opera.A wall of silence falls over the hall, Roger does not speak for a couple of seconds and I dare say it’s a bit embarrassing.

Finally, he starts his speech and emphasizes that he will not explain anything, but will be happy to answer any questions.More unexpected silence.I will not report the questions asked and the answers given by Roger, they have been already mentioned in the forum including the excellent explanations;

Indeed, Italy is an important reference point for Roger.The difference between The Wall and Ca ira is that in the former he adopted different kinds of bases, the drums, the guitar, the bass and in the latter there is the orchestra, the chorus...and furthermore, the idea did not spring from his mind; Ca ira was not created by him, The Wall was.There is little to say about the sound technology; he actually shows little interest in the new sound technologies.Even though Ca ira is based on the French Revolution, it includes some aspects which involve the negative facts of our times.Concerning Live, Roger smiles and drops his eye contact, he says he is happy for having met the others, for having played the songs of the past; it was a super sensation for him.

It seems that Roger was convinced and understood that you can get along with people who have different ideas from yours........…..that it is possibile to find a meeting point and that only now he has realized how naive it was on his part to have taken sides.He closes the conference by stating with a smile and a drop of the head that concerning the possibility of a Pink Floyd reunion: “maybe”. I then stand up quickly and ask him to sign a photo I have always kept with me showing a young Roger smiling with his head inclined; he looks at me and exclaims: “my photo”He signs the photo and I give him my pamphlet which I prepared at home showing the most significant pages of the site, the cover of the site, the home page, Roger’s bio, the print of the Pink Floyd Style and related wallpapers.At the top of the pamphlet I included the website address and my home address in big letters.......you never know, do you?After this, numerous people jumped in for autographs; to note that I:1) the first person to have an autograph and not like the others who had theirs on the CD tag, but on a photo portraying Roger in ’71 that I brought with me from home.2) the first person to have given Roger my Pink Floyd Style website.At the end of the autograph signing session, Roger stands up, I manage only to touch his shoulder and say goodbye to him while he had already turned his back.We stop for a while just to savour some small pastry cakes, fruit juice and coffee kindly offered to us and I then exchange e-mail addresses with people that I met there. At a certain point, after 20 minutes we decide to leave the hall; we see Roger outside being interviewed by a TV network, so I jump in for the last unexpected opportunity of being close to him again and I take another photo while he is being interviewed.Roger enters the auditorium, the doors are closed...the show is over.


We exit, still with disbelief and I find myself writing my story and I still don’t believe the thing that makes me happy, which is not so much the fact of the autograph or of having seen him, but my greatest sensation is to have personally given him the Pink Floyd Style website material, who knows.....and I’m happy to have exchanged glimpses with him...the moment when he looked into my digital camera viewfinder and when I tried to look at him, he dropped his eye contact ...how angry I was..
